Visitors from around the world flocked to this years Robin Hood festival which is held annually in Sherwood Forest. This was the 14th time this celebration of our world-famous outlaw has been held, taking enthusiasts of all ages back in time to medieval Sherwood.

The weekend programme of events included jousting and skirmishing, displays, falconry, "have-a-go" archery, and medieval entertainment from minstrels and jesters.

The Robin Hood Pageant 1998

The Sheriff of Nottingham Chris Gibson greeted visitors from the castle gate house as sell out crowds prepared to take their seats for the evening programme of floodlit jousting and medieval mayhem.

Thousands of people flocked to Nottingham castle this year to the site of the annual Robin Hood Pageant.

During the day, visitors joined in a multitude of festivities around an authentic medieval village scene complete with jugglers, jesters, musicians and artists entertaining the assembled throng for all they were worth.

Skilled craft demonstrators brought old traditions back to life and a host of stalls gave plenty of choice for gift and souvenir hunters

Amongst the village life it was easy to spot the ratcatcher as he plied his trade scavenging for vermin and shouting his presence to young and old alike

In the evening, the village was transformed by candlelight as entertainers weaved songs of old with the smell of savoury food stalls and the clash of jousting knights on horseback filled the night
